Rollator Buying Guide

Graham Johnson |

Rollators (wheeled walking frames) make a big difference to confidence and independence when walking outdoors or around the house — but the right one depends on where you'll use it and what you need it to do.

Indoor vs outdoor rollators

Indoor rollators tend to be more compact, with smaller wheels suited to manoeuvring around furniture. Outdoor rollators have larger wheels and better suspension for pavements, kerbs, and uneven ground.

Tri-walkers and carbon rollators

Tri-walkers (three-wheeled) are lighter and more manoeuvrable in tight spaces, useful indoors or in shops. Carbon-fibre rollators are significantly lighter than standard steel or aluminium frames, making them easier to lift in and out of a car — worth considering if strength or fatigue is a factor.

Height and weight limits

Rollators are height-adjustable within a range, but it's worth checking the minimum and maximum handle height suits you comfortably before buying. Weight limits also vary between models — if you're a larger or taller user, ask us about heavy-duty options.

Brakes, folding and boot transport

Look for rollators with easy-to-use hand brakes, ideally with a parking brake function for when you're seated. Most rollators fold flat for storage or car boot transport — check the folded dimensions if boot space is limited.

Seat height and fall prevention

Many rollators include a built-in seat for resting on longer outings — useful if you tire easily or need to pause on a walk. A stable, well-fitted rollator with a good braking system can also reduce fall risk by giving you a secure, steady support while walking.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a rollator and a standard walking frame?
Rollators have wheels and brakes, allowing a continuous walking motion, whereas standard frames need to be lifted with each step.

Will a rollator fit in my car boot?
Most fold flat — check the folded dimensions on the product page, or bring your car details into a showroom and we'll help you choose.

Can I try a few models before deciding?
