VAT Relief and Motability Guide

Graham Johnson |

Two of the questions we're asked most often are "can I get this VAT-free?" and "can I get this on Motability?" This guide gives a plain-English overview of both. It's general information, not personal tax advice — for anything specific to your circumstances, our team or an accountant can help confirm eligibility.

VAT relief for disabled customers

In the UK, many mobility products can be sold VAT-free to customers who are chronically sick or disabled and are buying the item for their own personal or domestic use. This typically covers products like mobility scooters, powerchairs, wheelchairs, stairlifts, and certain other daily living aids, when bought by or for someone who qualifies.

Who qualifies?

HMRC's definition of "chronically sick or disabled" is broader than many people expect — it doesn't require a formal disability benefit or registration. Broadly, it covers people with a physical or mental impairment that has a long-term and substantial effect on their ability to carry out everyday activities, as well as people with a chronic (long-term) illness. It does not cover temporary conditions, such as a broken leg.

How VAT relief works when you buy from us

If you qualify, you simply complete a short eligibility declaration at the point of purchase — you don't pay VAT upfront and reclaim it later. Our team can talk you through the declaration and confirm which products in your order are eligible.

The Motability Scheme

The Motability Scheme allows people receiving a qualifying mobility allowance to lease certain mobility equipment — including some scooters and powerchairs — using that allowance, rather than paying the full cost upfront. As an approved Motability dealer, we can talk you through which products are available on the scheme and what's involved.

Who is eligible for Motability?

Eligibility depends on receiving a qualifying mobility-related benefit at the appropriate rate. Because eligibility rules and benefit names can change, we'd always recommend confirming your current entitlement with Motability directly or with us before assuming a product is or isn't available to you on the scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need proof of disability to get VAT relief?
No formal proof or registration is required — you self-declare eligibility using HMRC's criteria, and we can help you understand whether that applies to you.

Can I buy on Motability from any of your stores?
Yes, all our Kent showrooms can support Motability purchases — visit us or get in touch to talk it through.

Can family members buy VAT-free on behalf of a disabled person?
Yes, if the product is for that person's personal or domestic use, the purchaser doesn't need to be the disabled person themselves.

What if I'm not sure whether I qualify?
Speak to our team — we deal with this every day and can help you work out whether VAT relief or Motability applies to your situation, and point you to HMRC or Motability directly for anything we can't confirm ourselves.
